스누커 당구는 영국권에서는 럭비, 승마와 더불어 3대 신사스포츠로 불리우고 있습니다.
세계 프로 스누커 협회 (WPBSA) 에서 주관하는 월드 스누커 투어에는 전 세계 130여명의 프로 스누커 선수만이 참가할 수 있으며, 잉글랜드를 중심으로 한 유럽 선수들이 대부분 자리를 차지하고 있지만, 아시아권에서도 중국, 태국, 인도, 카타르, 홍콩, 말레이시아 등 30여 명의 선수가 출전하고 있습니다.
매년 6월 첫 대회를 시작으로 다음해 5월 영국 셰필드에서 열리는 월드 챔피언쉽까지 11개월간 랭킹 토너먼드 18회와 초청 토너먼트 8회 등 총 26회의 토너먼트가 열립니다.
특히, 스누커 대회중 가장 역사가 깊고 또 규모나 상금면에서 단연 최고의 대회인 월드 챔피언쉽은 우승을 하게 되면 월드 스포츠 스타로 발돋움할 수 있게 됩니다. (2017 스누커 월드 챔피언쉽 우승상금은 37만5천 파운드로, 한화 약 6억3천만원입니다.)
월드 스누커의 모든 경기는 중국을 비롯한 전 세계에 중계 되고 있으며, 2016 스누커 월드 챔피언쉽은 무려 2억1천만 명의 사람들이 시청하는 엄청난 시청률을 기록하였습니다.

World Snooker Limited's primary objective is to organise, promote or sanction all professional snooker events globally. This is done through either direct promotion for major UK events like the World Championship, the UK Championship and the Masters; co-promotion for International events like, the International Championship, China Open, Shanghai Masters and Australian Open.
World Snooker promote and sanction some of the most iconic sporting events in the World. With 150,000 spectators per annum, attendance of snooker events has grown by over 50% in the past 5 years.
With over 5000 hours of live broadcast coverage, reaching over 550 million viewers in 120 countries, snooker is one of the most highly televised and most loved sports in the World. Spanning four continents World Snooker partners over 23 World Class broadcasters reaching over 120 different countries.
